I recently came across an Akira Kurosawa quote, “The role of the artist is to not look away.” I was horrified when the first bodies of residential school children were found. Horrified and ashamed. How could I not have known? Did I know and not listen? So this sculpture is me not looking away.
She is a mother. Her children have been ripped away from her. She is powerless and voiceless but still she writhes, struggles, and fights to keep her children safe. She never heals. How can she?
